Pervez Musharraf was a Pakistani military officer and politician who served as the President of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008. He was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi, India, and spent most of his childhood and early adult life in Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947.
He joined the Pakistan Army in 1964 and rose through the ranks to become the Chief of Army Staff in 1998.
In 1999, Musharraf led a military coup that overthrew the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He declared himself the Chief Executive of Pakistan and later became the President in 2001 through a controversial referendum.
During his presidency, Musharraf implemented several economic and political reforms and played a key role in the war against terrorism following the 9/11 attacks.
Musharraf faced growing opposition and political turmoil during his later years in office, and in 2008 he resigned from the presidency under the threat of impeachment. After leaving office, he lived in self-exile for several years before returning to Pakistan in 2013. He faced several legal challenges, including charges of treason, but was eventually granted immunity from prosecution.
