New Local Body System in Punjab: 11 Metropolitans and 25 District Councils Proposed
According to the recommendations of the committee set up by Prime Minister Imran Khan, under the new local government system, Punjab will have 11 metropolitan constituencies and 25 district councils.
According to a news report published in daily Express Lahore, a committee set up by Prime Minister Imran Khan on the upcoming local body system in Punjab has prepared recommendations on the local body system, which will be submitted to the Prime Minister next week for approval.
The recommendations and suggestions say that under the new local government system, there will be 11 metropolitan areas in Punjab, under which Sialkot is being given the status of metropolitan in view of its global status, Gujarat has also been given the status of metropolitan. Yes, there will be metropolitan police at 9 divisional headquarters.
Under the new local government system, there will be 25 district councils in Punjab, district Nazim and mayor of metropolitan will be elected directly and on party basis, there will be a system of neighborhood head council, village council and tehsil council, the election of neighborhood head council and village council. It will be on a non-partisan basis, with a population of 10,000 to 20,000 in the Village Council and 15,000 to 20,000 in the Neighborhood Head Council.
The proposals call for the establishment of a Panchayat Council system along with the Village Council. The members of the five-member Panchayat Council will be nominated by the Chairman of the Village Council. The council will look after sanitation, street lights, janitors, schools and minor disputes, and will have the power to levy minor taxes.
The Neighborhood Council and Village Council will have one seat for senior citizens, the Lahore Metropolitan Corporation will have a town instead of a Neighborhood Head Council and the mayors of the town will be directly elected.
