Karachi is a metro[politon city. Its population is crossing two crore persons.
While transport problem is is one of the biggest issues of the peoples. In 2016 former Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif laid the foundation stone of the green line metro bus system. Now its is called Green Line BRT System.
It is 25 kilometers long., starting from the City Railway station and terminates at Surjani Town.. 25 stations has been built on it for travelers.
Buses for Greenline
The Greenline Karachi buses are Euro 3 standard. Bus manufacturer Zong Tong is one of the top five companies in China. The 18-meter-long buses have 40 seats. 150 people will be able to travel standing and on the seats at the same time, in case of heavy rush 190 passengers will be accommodated.
The buses have a special place for the disabled and an automatic ramp is installed. Each bus has space for two wheelchairs.
Foundation Stone in 2016
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif laid the foundation stone of the project in February 2016, which was to be completed by the end of 2017. But Sindh Government did not show its interest in the completion of the project in time. Govt of Sindh later refused to share the fund.
The Green Line project is based on a 2015 study on the deteriorating condition of public transport in Karachi.
Total Cost
The initial cost of the project was estimated at Rs. 16.85 billion, but at the suggestion of the Sindh government, the route of the project was extended by another 10 km, increasing the cost to 24 billion Rupees..
