Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif (Urdu, Punjabi: میاں محمد نواز شریف; born 25 December 1949) is a Pakistani businessman and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms. He is the longest-serving prime minister of Pakistan, having served a total of more than 9 years across three tenures. Each term has ended in his ousting.

Early life and education

Nawaz Sharif was born in Lahore, Punjab, on 25 December 1949. The Sharif family are Kashmiris of Punjab. His father, Muhammad Sharif, was an upper-middle-class businessman and industrialist whose family had emigrated from Anantnag in Kashmir for business.

They settled in the village of Jati Umra in Amritsar district, Punjab, at the beginning of the twentieth century. His mother’s family came from Pulwama. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Nawaz’s parents migrated from Amritsar to Lahore. His father followed the teachings of the Ahl-i Hadith.

Nawaz Sharif was educated at Government College University, Lahore, where he obtained a degree in law. He then joined his father’s business, Ittefaq Industries, and became a successful businessman.

Political career

Nawaz Sharif entered politics in the early 1980s, and was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1981. Sharif’s first term as Prime Minister was short-lived, as he was dismissed by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan in 1993 on charges of corruption and mismanagement. However, Sharif returned to power in 1997, after winning the general election. His second term as Prime Minister was also marked by controversy, and he was overthrown in a military coup led by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999.

Sharif was exiled to Saudi Arabia for several years, but returned to Pakistan in 2007 to lead his party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in the general election. However, the election was postponed due to the imposition of emergency rule by Musharraf.

Sharif was finally able to return to power in 2013, after leading the PML-N to victory in the general election. He served as Prime Minister for a third term until 2017, when he was disqualified from holding office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on charges of corruption.
